I spy with my little eye...

A few of Panathlitikos' current and ex-players have been spotted playing beach volleyball in 2007.
Their actions and technique had been kept hidden, up to now... Revelations!

Panathlitikos vs Aias

We unfortunately began our second round with a loss, in a game that we all think we should have won. We lost the first two sets cause our game was very static. No energy. We essentially handed the win over to them. We entered the third set with high spirits and managed to win that and the following set. We lost the tie-break.

Panathlitikos vs Asteria Pylaias

We lost 3-1 against Asteria Pylaias.
We won the first set and lost the remaining three.

That was the last match of the first round. We are currently placed 8th (out of 12).

The second round begins immediately and after that we'll have a rather large break for Christmas and new year's.

Panathlitikos vs Navarhos Botsis

Big CONGRADS to the team.
We scored an important victory against one of the better teams (Botsis) in our league. We won 3-1 and all players performed very well. I think our block was key: Iron Curtains!!!

We are currently placed in the middle, rank-wise, and there is one more game left till the end of the first round.

P.S. Barbie, you rock!

Panathlitikos vs MENT

Our team put forward an excellent game against one of our league's best teams. We ended up losing the game but managed to win one set. Also, all the lost sets were very close... think 25-23.

The numbers speak for themselves... Like the Swingers from Canada we are Dangerous!

Panathlitikos vs AS Pera

Our team was involved in yet another cliffhanger match. We played against AS Pera and won 3-2.
We won the first, lost the second, won the third, lost the fourth and finally won the fifth set.
All in all, an enjoyable game.

Most of our games this season end with a tie-break set... The reason was obvious yet always elusive. Things however have changed! I can now proclaim with a fair amount of confidence why we always go to the tie-brake:
We love volleyball too much! We want to play as much as possible even if that means (and it has meant) a possible loss.

I am of course joking. Half-joking...
;)

Panathlitikos vs Polygyros (AOP)

In a total nerve-cracking, jaw-dropping, unexpected game we lost 3-2 to Polygyros last Thursday.
We were winning 2-0 with relative ease. Heck, we were winning 13-7 in the third set but ended up losing 25-23. The rest of the game was downhill.

The loss prompted a team discussion that, we hope, will have solved some problems. Tomorrow's game shall be the judge. Stay tuned!

Panathlitikos vs Galaxias

We played against one of the best teams in our league and lost 3-0.
The beginning of the first set was kind of bad, cause our reception was under-performing. It later got better and remained good till the end of the match.
During the middle of the first set there were signs that the improbable could actually happen, that we could push and score a win. Things were at their best at 20-19 but we couldn't keep it up and lost.
The remaining two sets were easily won by them.

Panathlitikos vs AEN Agias Triadas (AEN Holy Trinity)

We managed to score an important victory this last Thursday. Not because we were playing a against a good team, but because we hadn't scored a victory for a while; it thus became a moral booster.
We won 3-2. A very unpredictable match...

Panathlitikos vs HANTH (YMCA)

We lost on Thursday against the YMCA. They have a decent team and managed to win with relative ease. Our game lacked energy. And that's it.

Panathlitikos vs Niki Eukarpias

On Thursday we played against Niki Eukarpias.
We lost. It's a pity cause we won the first two sets with relative ease and then lost the next three with a very tight score. I would attribute our loss to lack of experience reflected in the fact that when we made mistakes they were always very costly (they were made at crucial times).

There is a video of the game, which I will digitize and distribute to the team. I may or may not upload it on Google Video, depending on whether our coach thinks our adversaries can benefit by studying the video.

Panathlitikos vs Aetos

We lost yesterday in a match against Aetos, 3-1.
It seems their experience, reflected in very smart tipping, got the better of us in the first two sets.
We were able to win the third set. By that time I felt very sure we would do a big come back and win the remaining sets but the forth set ended with 25-23 for them.

Panathlitikos vs Aias

The first official match for this year's championship was fortunately a win, 3-1.
The win was against Aias, a team that has been playing in A Regional for several years now, and as such a moral booster. The result was probably unexpected by others as it prompted EPESTH's website to write that newly-illuminated Panathlitikos' win against Aias was singled-out (ξεχώρισε και η νίκη του νεοφώτιστου Παναθλητικού Συκεών επί του Αίαντα με 3-1).

Panathlitikos vs Bergina

The first official match for the year ends with a win for us.
We played against Bergina and won 3-1 in a relatively easy game.

Detailed score:
25-10
21-25
25-15
25-15
We shouldn't have lost that second set but some serves just wouldn't go in.

The game was the first for EPESTH's cup, and the win, along with some drawing luck, already put us into the final 8.

Panathlitikos vs Epikouros

Our second friendly game for the season was a win.
We managed a 3-1 against Epikouros, a team that plays in the A2 National league. That would be 2 levels above us. So how did we manage? We played against Epikouros' young team (adolescents) and not their man's team. The score might have been different then :o)

Panathlitikos vs Niki Eukarpias

It's kind of unfortunate that our first game for the season starts with a loss.
We played against Niki Eukarpias, a long-time rival with whom we will once more be playing in the same league. We lost the first two sets and won the last, yielding a 2-1 final score.
The game was a 'friendly' one and that would explain why it finished before a 3rd set was won.
Our loss should be attributed to many lost servers. Defense was so so, slightly on the bad side.

Our game once more exhibited somewhat of a slow-start. By the third set we were playing much closer to where we should be. And this is exactly why the loss doesn't worry me.

10 days for the first official game of the year.
Stay tuned!

Tuesday, August 21, 2007

And so it begins...

Today marked our first training session for the 2007 - 2008 season.
Things are serious: We did lots of running. Far more than last year's first training session.

The critics agree: This will be an excellently rigorous training season.

Expect improvement!!!

Summer Break

We entered our summer break on Thursday.
The team has until August 20 to relax, recuperate, replenish (strength) and other re's.

Overall 2006-2007 was a hard-work season coupled with steady improvement and lots of fun. Let's hope next season proves as full.

Goose signing off for the summer!

Panathlitikos vs Galaxias

We played against Galaxias today, in a friendly match.
The match ended in a tie. We lost the first two sets and then won the next two.
Bad defense was the culprit of the first lost set.

Although we didn't play too well overall and we were missing our main setter and outside hitter, we managed a tie with a team that was placed in the middle of A Regional.

Till next match...

Panathlitikos vs Makedon Ampelokipon

Yesterday was our last official game for the season.
We beat Makedon 3-0.

Tuesday, April 3, 2007

Panathlitikos vs Nestor

The team pulled it off once more!
We beat Nestor 3-0 in a swift match.

Only one game remains till the end of the championship which will take place after April the 13th due to recent shocking events.

Panathlitikos vs AO Kavaklioton

We beat AO Kavaklioton yesterday in a swift match, 3-0.

What's interesting about AO Kavaklioton? Their uniforms.
The uniforms spell AOK while their emblem is a Shamrock.
The combination could be a pun on their side... They could be satirizing P.A.O.K and P.A.O, two well established teams in Greece.

Panathlitikos vs Bergina

Today marks our second loss in the volleyball league.
We lost to Bergina 2-3.

We were winning the first 2 sets. Then things sort of fell apart and we lost.
Tons of lost serves, coupled with bad defense and as a result low quality sets, were the major culprits.

Nothing is over and we are gonna fight to finish first in the league.

Friday, March 9, 2007

Panathlitikos vs Eukarpia

Yes, it's that time of the week again, Thursday, and yet another game finished in favor of Panathlitikos. We beat Eukarpia 3-1.

We are now first with a 4 point difference from the second. Awesome...

Sunday, March 4, 2007

Panathlitikos vs Klimakio

We had a friendly match today with Klimakio. We won 4-1.

Klimakio loosely translates into Laddering. Anyway Ladering is the stage just below a National Team. It's the place where they train youths with potential to become part of the National Team in the future. Kind of like scaffolding for the future.

And yes we beat them. We beat a pre-national team. And yes i'm bragging....

Barely legible footnote:
Klimakio consists of children aged 14-16. The mean of their team's ages would be 15.
The mean of our team's ages would be close to 25.
No... it wasn't stealing candy from children!!!

Panathlitikos vs Polygyros (AOP)

We scored an important victory yesterday. The chances that we'll finish first in our league are now very high.

The match was against Polygyros. The result was 3-2 and it progressed like so:
0-1
0-2
1-2
2-2
3-2

Our first-set performance was lousy. There was no movement on our part. Our offense was actually quite passive. Polygyros won the set real easy.
The middle of the second set was our wake-up point and although we did lose it by 2 points we were already warmed up and heading to the right direction. We won the next three sets.

Panathlitikos vs Makedon Ampelokipon

We scored a victory a couple of hours ago.
It was a swift 3-0 game.
Nothing else to report really...

Young Panathlitikos

So you've searched around the internet and found another blog about Panathlitikos.... You shouldn't be confused, it's from another player on my team.

All for volleyball and PANATHLITIKOS
In there you 'll find some information concerning Volleyball in general, as well as Panathlitikos news for our young team and men's team.

Panathlitikos vs Doksa

The match against Doksa never in fact took place. Not enough people showed in their practice and hence couldn't come and play with us.
So let's see... does this mean we won by default against a team that's a level above us? No... The game was a friendly game, so a win or loss doesn't matter. It's pure volleyball fun.

Next championship game is on Thursday.

Panathlitikos cuts the pie

Panathlitikos will be cutting the pie at 2007-02-11 (this coming sunday).
Why on earth would we be cutting a pie? Well, we may be doing it in a delayed fashion, but traditions requires a Vassilopitta.

Panathlitikos vs Nestor

Panathlitikos beat Nestor yesterday 3-0. The match was smooth, and kind of progressed as expected.

It was a good preparation for our next match which although friendly, is very important: We are playing on Monday with Doxa. Doxa is the team that currently holds first place in A Regional (among 12 teams) and does so with a solid point difference. So, Monday will be a very good indication, and test if you will, of our ability to compete next year in A Regional. We will put up a fight and struggle till the end!

Stay tuned for news on Monday or at the latest Tuesday.

Friday, February 2, 2007

Panathlitikos vs AO Kavaklioton

Panathlitikos scored a victory yesterday against AO Kavaklioton.
It was a relatively easy 3-0. But the opponents did play better than they did last we met, a couple of months back.

Everything is looking good for out team. The championship progresses well. There were some surprises but they all involved other teams.

Our next game is in a week.

Panathlitikos vs AEN - Holy Trinity

Panathiltikos played against AEN - Holy Trinity today.
The game was a friendly game and as such had no significance with respect to ranking. Also, AEN is one level higher than us at the moment. They play A Regional while we play B Regional. Nonetheless we were able to win 2-1.
In the first set our team lacked movement and our coach attributed the loss to exactly that. To give some credit to AEN, two of their players were injured during the game. Would the result have been different, had they not been injured? Even though it may sound cocky, I'd like to think no.
We are making steady progress towards A Regional. It's mathematically almost impossible that we don't advance. Unless of course something very weird happens.

We have another game on Thursday, and this time it's an official one.

Stay tuned...
